China's agricultural mechanization reform and development has gone through multiple stages, achieving remarkable achievements and continuing to advance to even greater heights.
Development History
Preparatory and Development Period (1949-1957): In the early years of the People's Republic of China, the agricultural machinery industry had a weak foundation.
During the First Five-Year Plan period, the country began to systematically develop the agricultural machinery industry. Among the 156 key projects assisted by the Soviet Union was the construction of the Luoyang First Tractor Factory.
By 1957, there were 276 agricultural machinery manufacturing enterprises nationwide, employing 123,000 people and 8,000 metal-cutting machine tools-a 6.7-fold, 30-fold, and 15-fold increase, respectively, compared to 1949.

Formal Development Period (1958-1965): With the start of the "Great Leap Forward" in 1958, the agricultural machinery industry experienced rapid development. Capital construction investment increased, and a large number of new agricultural machinery products were trial-produced.
For example, the Tianjin Tractor Factory successfully trial-produced the 40-horsepower Tieniu brand wheeled tractor, and the First Tractor Manufacturing Plant successfully trial-produced the 54-horsepower Dongfanghong crawler tractor. In 1959, the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery was established to strengthen leadership and management of the agricultural machinery industry.
From 1961 to 1962, the country adjusted its industrial production, and the agricultural machinery industry followed suit. By the end of 1964, China had 125,000 standard agricultural tractors and 7.5 million horsepower power irrigation and drainage equipment.
High-Speed Development Period (1966-1979): During this period, agricultural mechanization was promoted nationwide on a large scale.
The number of agricultural machinery manufacturers further increased, and the variety and quantity of agricultural machinery equipment continued to expand, providing important support for agricultural production.
Rapid Development Period (2004-Present): With the promulgation of the "Law on Promoting Agricultural Mechanization" in 2004, the central government established agricultural machinery purchase subsidies for the first time.
Subsidies have since increased continuously, significantly promoting the widespread use of agricultural machinery and improving mechanization levels.
In recent years, with the continuous advancement of science and technology, agricultural machinery has developed towards intelligent and high-end features, and agricultural mechanization has entered a stage of high-quality development.

Current Development Status
Mechanization levels have significantly improved: By 2024, the national comprehensive mechanization rate for crop cultivation and harvesting will exceed 75%, achieving the "14th Five-Year Plan" target one year ahead of schedule.
Major grain crops such as wheat, corn, and rice have achieved a high level of mechanization, essentially achieving full mechanization throughout the entire production process.
Agricultural machinery and equipment are continuously upgraded: A number of landmark complete equipment have achieved breakthroughs, including the entry into small-scale production of pneumatic electric-driven high-speed precision seeders, 580-horsepower forage harvesters, and large square balers, breaking the long-standing reliance on imports.
At the same time, intelligent equipment such as chick beak trimming robots and facility inspection robots are also beginning to be used in agricultural production.
Support policies are constantly improving: The "Implementation Opinions on Agricultural Machinery Purchase and Application Subsidies (2024-2026)" were issued, further promoting the "preferential subsidies for superior machinery" and "both inflow and outflow" policy, with a focus on supporting high-end intelligent agricultural machinery and agricultural machinery suitable for hilly and mountainous areas.
Subsidies for agricultural machinery scrapping and replacement will be increased, the categories of scrapped machinery will be expanded, and subsidy standards will be raised.

Development Trends
Intelligent and Unmanned Operations: Agricultural machinery will deeply integrate technologies such as 5G, Beidou navigation, the Internet of Things, big data, and AI, enabling everything from autonomous driving to fully unmanned operations, improving precision and efficiency.
Breakthroughs in Green and Energy-Saving Technologies: New energy agricultural machinery, such as electric tractors and solar irrigation equipment, will gradually replace fuel-powered engines, reducing carbon emissions and operating costs.
At the same time, through technological optimization, the fuel efficiency of traditional agricultural machinery will be improved.
Regional Adaptation and Customization: Targeting the topographical differences and crop characteristics of different regions, specialized machine models, such as small crawler harvesters and high-clearance sprayers, will be developed to meet the agricultural production needs of diverse areas, such as hilly and mountainous areas and paddy fields in southern China.
