A carrot digger is a type of agricultural machinery used for harvesting carrots, and is a type of root vegetable harvester.

The following is a detailed introduction to carrot diggers:

Types: Carrot diggers can be divided into two types: digging and combined operation. Digging root vegetable harvesters can top and dig the vegetables, then lay them out into strips.

Combined operation root vegetable harvesters come in two types: one that grips the stems and leaves, pulls the vegetables out of the soil, and then separates the stems and leaves from the soil; the other that first removes the stems and leaves, then digs the vegetables out of the soil and clears away any soil and weeds.

Operating Principle and Main Components: For example, a self-propelled double-row carrot combine harvester is driven by a self-propelled rubber track chassis. Its main working components include a transmission system, digging mechanism, gripping and conveying mechanism, root and leaf separation mechanism, and soil removal and collection mechanism.

As the machine moves, a straw lifter lifts the carrot stems and leaves, and a digging shovel loosens the soil around the carrots.

Once the carrots enter the gripping device, they are gripped and lifted by a rubber gripping belt and transported upward. They then switch to a horizontal gripping belt for horizontal backward transport.

A double-disc cutting device separates the roots and leaves, and the carrots fall onto a grating-type soil removal conveyor for soil removal before being transported to a collection bin.

Domestic R&D: The Nanjing Institute of Agricultural Mechanization, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, independently developed a lightweight carrot combine harvester featuring key technologies such as vibration-driven drag-reducing digging, spiral cone rollers for separating and lifting carrot buds, vertical right-angle gripping conveyor, and automatic alignment for efficient bud cutting.

The resulting towed carrot combine harvester, based on these technologies, achieves intelligent operations in all aspects of carrot harvesting, sorting, and transportation.

This combine harvester achieves a 97% clean harvest rate and can harvest two mu (approximately 1.6 acres) per hour, equivalent to the daily harvest of over 30 workers.

Typical international models: The GRIMME CM-1000C carrot harvester is a mounted puller belt harvester with an integrated crating system for direct crate loading. It is supported by a pull-bar and central suspension bracket.

A blade loosens the soil at the roots, a rotating conical lifter lifts the carrot tops, a puller belt pulls the carrots out, a root cleaner removes adhering soil, and a cutter removes the stems from the leaves.

The carrots are then transported to the crates via a sorting platform. This machine is primarily designed for small farms.
